About Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are complex.

You are complex.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy honors the complexity of your history and of your brain.

Many therapy modalities focus on modifying behavior. While making behavioral changes is important psychodynamic psychotherapy recognizes that you feel and behave the way you do for a reason. Difficult situations and disappointments arose during your earliest, most formative years. You coped the best you could and laid down patterns deep in your brain. These patterns are not easily changed. If it were easy- if you could just choose a different response- you wouldn’t be searching for a therapist.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on gaining insight into the ways you learned to cope with difficulty very early in life and creating experiential opportunities for laying down new patterns of response.

While psychodynamic psychotherapy is not a quick fix, clients often notice significant benefits within three to six months. Perhaps more importantly- and in contrast to other modalities- research shows that psychodynamic psychotherapy facilitates change that endures and even continues to build after therapy ends.*

Amy Rager, LMHCA

Amy Rager (she/her), MA, LMHCA was drawn to becoming a therapist by a desire to create a safe, accepting space where individuals could explore the depths of themselves. Life inevitably causes us to want to retract, become smaller, play it safer, hide… What inspires Amy is seeing her clients begin to take risks, bringing formerly repressed parts of themselves online, and living more expansive, fulfilling lives.

Amy offers both in-person and telehealth sessions to Indiana residents ages 18 and older.
